How to reach the Soggy Dollar the easy way
There is no dock at White Bay, so every route ends in the water. Here is what that means and how we handle it.
The Soggy Dollar is on White Bay, Jost Van Dyke, and it got its name because there is no dock. Boats anchor off and people swim in with their money in their pocket. That single fact is the answer to most questions about getting there.
The arrival, honestly
Whatever route you take, you finish in the water. We anchor off White Bay and you swim or wade ashore from the boat. It is a short distance and it is the fun part, not the obstacle. Float noodles and life jackets are on board if you want one, and anyone who would rather stay aboard can stay aboard.
White Bay is one of the best beaches in the Caribbean and the bar behind it invented the Painkiller, so it is worth the short swim.
Going by boat from Tortola
From West End, Tortola, Jost Van Dyke is a short hop across the channel. That is the reason we leave from there. You are not spending the morning in transit, and the boat goes straight into White Bay rather than dropping you somewhere you then have to get across the island from.
Our Soggy Dollar and Willy T Tour starts at White Bay for exactly that reason, then carries on round to Foxy’s in Great Harbour, across to Norman Island for lunch at Pirates Bight, the sea caves where turtles are a regular sight, and the Willy T at the end. It is about seven hours with a morning start we confirm when we confirm your date.
The Trifecta Tour also finishes on Jost Van Dyke, after Norman Island and The Baths, if you want the Soggy Dollar as the last thing you do rather than the first.
If you are not on Tortola
We can collect you at Nanny Cay, or at Village Cay Marina in Road Town if you are arriving by cruise ship, and neither costs extra. Pickups at Jost Van Dyke, Scrub Island and Virgin Gorda carry a surcharge: $75, $100 and $150 in that order. We confirm the number before you book so nothing lands on you on the day.
Cruise ship guests can do the Soggy Dollar as a half day. We collect you at Village Cay from 7am, whenever your ship comes in, and have you back at least an hour before it sails.
What to take ashore
Take some cash. Take what you are happy to swim with and leave the rest on the boat, because everything you carry in is going to get wet. Sunscreen before you go rather than a bottle in your hand.
Drinks on the boat are already included: water, sodas, beers and a Painkiller each, in an iced cooler. What you buy on the beach is yours to settle.
Timing and weather
The route on the day can change with the weather and the sea state, and your captain decides what is safe and fun. On some days the wind and the swell make another beach the better call. If that happens, you are not losing the day, you are getting a different good one.
Booking
Tell us your date, your group size and whether the Soggy Dollar is the priority or one stop among several. We check the boat, quote one all-inclusive price for up to 12 guests, and hold the date with a deposit.
